In early 2021, Zhong Zheng Senior High School (ZZSHS) in Taipei reached out to Concordia College to enquire about establishing an online learning environment where students from both schools could collaboratively learn and share a global and cultural perspective on selected subject content. Equally, for the students in Taipei it would also strengthen their grasp of the English language.
Both Brendan Toohey and Hajnalka Malloy immediately became interested and commenced liaising with the ZZSHS Principal and their learning team to consider content.
The Principal of ZZSHS advised that they have made an application to become an IB school and following an introduction from Concordia they have also connected with the SACE Board and sought approval to offer the SACE in 2022.
To date, Brendan has led several online learning sessions including marine issues and the environmental impacts placed on our oceans and waterways. This term, Roz Crossing is preparing to trial a Year 9 physics topic – light. Involving Paul Bannister and Will Mead, the students will participate in a practical demonstration on eye dissection. In 2022, Chrissie File is hopeful for the opportunity to explore media as a shared subject.
The learning is not exclusive to the students as ZZSHS is keen to share and participate in joint Professional Development with Concordia teaching staff. Once overseas travel is considered safe again this relationship with ZZSHS will hopefully see an exchange program allowing students from both schools to visit each other and embrace an appreciation of our cultures.
