We recently had a Year 7 and a Year 9 team compete at the 2022 da Vinci Decathlon at St Peter's Girls' School. The competition is inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. He was a passionate lifelong learner and tackled problems with a determination to uncover the unknown. This academic competition is designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines:
- Engineering
- Mathematics and Chess
- Code Breaking
- Art and Poetry
- Science
- English
- Ideation
- Creative Producers
- Cartography
- Legacy.
The Legacy section required students to show broad general knowledge, know facts about the life and influence of Leonardo da Vinci and understand the significance of the Renaissance period.
The Decathlon places a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills, problem solving and creativity. Students had to work productively as a team to divide the tasks, solve the challenges and combine their results, before submitting to the judges.
Schools from all across Adelaide took part in the competition. The tasks are very rigorous. To achieve a result in the top six in any category is exceptional.
Our Year 7 team placed in the top six in: Science, Creative Producers, Ideation, Cartography and Legacy.
Our Year 9 team placed in the top six in: Engineering, Science, Mathematics and Code Breaking.
Congratulations to all the team members – we are proud of you.
