At St Peters Campus, the Year 1 and 2 students delved into environmental awareness during their 'Sharing the Planet' inquiry, focusing on the impacts of pollution with a particular emphasis on plastic. Group-work sessions helped students to collaboratively discuss and brainstorm the various impacts plastic and pollution have on the environment. They heard the picture book 'Say No to Plastic' which showed some of the harmful effects of plastic pollution. This encouraged them to critically think about the issue and ignited a desire in many to find solutions.
Another highlight of the lesson was the provocation table that helped students lead their own independent inquiries into animals and ecosystems affected by pollution. To enhance their understanding and learning, our students had the very exciting privilege of using the College virtual reality headsets, guided by our Teacher Librarian, Mrs Molloy. Through this technology, they embarked on a virtual journey to explore the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest. As a result of this inquiry, the students have already begun to generate ideas for sustainable alternatives for plastic.
