On Saturday 17 June, Lily (9CRID) competed in a heat of the South Australian Legacy Junior Public Speaking Competition. This is a national competition conducted through secondary schools in most parts of Australia. It seeks to contribute to the personal development of young people by encouraging the best use of spoken English. The aim of the Award is to enhance students’ oral communication skills and to help people appreciate the ideals of Legacy: voluntary service, social justice, care and compassion, personal sacrifice and mateship. Legacy is celebrating its 100th year of caring for families of our veterans in Australia. Members of the organisation are passionate in their belief that no dependent of a veteran — deceased or incapacitated— ever suffer from social or financial disadvantage.
All the students presented thought provoking and heartfelt speeches. Lily shared parts of the life story of her great grandfather who bravely served our country during World War II. It was very special that her grandparents were in the audience to hear her tribute. We were excited to learn that Lily has gained a place in the State Final to be held in August. We wish her all the best.
