Environmental Responsibility
On Thursday 8 June, the St John’s Campus Year 5s enjoyed a workshop led by Mr Ben Hyde, a current Concordia parent, who has been instrumental in developing and implementing biodiversity plans for the Australian Government. We learned about a number of endangered species who have adapted in amazing ways, each of which are threatened by loss of habitat, feral animals, the use of agricultural chemicals and the speed of climate change. We found there are many ways we can help.
Ben modelled the type of presentations we published last week as we filmed ourselves discussing the adaptations of our chosen organisms and presented infographics on our connected responsibilities. A big thank you to Ben – we loved the workshop and learned so much!
Futures Learning
On Thursday 8 June we also engaged with our second instalment of workshops enabling us to make connections with the wider community and industry.
- Our Reconciliation Group learned of traditional Ngarrindjeri weaving techniques and have begun making their own mats or baskets
- Our Literacy Group were introduced to Karen Mitchell and Catherine Manthay (Concordia Campus library staff) as they learned of and made use of the wider resources available in the Yangadlitya library at Concordia Campus
- Our STEM Group worked with Dr David Bird (from the CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools Program) to learn more about light and how we use its waves to view things through microscopes and telescopes, and to measure distance, speed and heat!
We look forward to continuing to build these relationships in Terms 3 and 4.
