Our Year 6 students from St John’s Campus have recently undertaken a tour of the national capital, Canberra. They were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. Students had many highlights, including visiting Parliament House where students role played the process of passing a bill in the House of Representatives, observing future world champion athletes training at the Australian Institute of Sport and orienteering amongst the trees at the National Arboretum. Throughout all experiences, students represented our College by displaying respect, enthusiasm and care for each other.
On their return to school this week, Year 6 students have reflected on their time in Canberra, considering what they did, what they learnt and how they can apply this information at school and beyond. It is clear the experiences shared in Canberra have enriched students’ inquiry into How We Organise Ourselves.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. The Australian Government is contributing funding of $90 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the cost of the trip which is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
