Misty Mountain, Shining Moon: Japanese Landscapes

South Australian Art Gallery
20 June 2024

As part of the Year 9 Visual Art focus on Japanese woodprints and Australian modernist printmakers, students have participated in guided tours of the exhibition ‘Misty Mountain, Shining Moon: Japanese Landscapes’.

Students viewed works from the sixteenth century to the present day, noting an evolving dialogue between artists and nature. The woodprints of the famous printmakers Hiroshige and Hokusai were highlighted, with our guides then making connections with the Australian impressionist and modernist artists, and their interest in Japonisme; the influence of Japanese art and design in the western world.

A favourite piece for many of our students was Chiharu Shiota's contemporary string installation, 'Absence Embodied'. TeamLab’s interactive digital artwork representing the seasons of the year was also a highlight.

It was pleasing to observe Concordia students’ engagement, questions and responses. Gallery tour guides commented on the interest, attentiveness and conduct of the four Concordia Art classes.
