On Tuesday of Week 8, 26 Year 8 German students attended a morning of quizzes and German culture at Pulteney Grammar School. The excursion, attended by students from Concordia College, Pulteney Grammar School and Adelaide High School, was the first of a range of events celebrating “Adelaide German Week”. Adelaide German Week is an annual initiative bringing together a range of German language stakeholders, including business leaders, teachers, university staff and representatives of the German Embassy and Consulate.
The event included quizzes on German language and culture; a display of German dancing, bell ringing and whip cracking; and a delicious morning tea of Berliners and pretzels. Students also had the opportunity to hear from Dr Simon Walsh (Lecturer, German Department of the University of Adelaide) and Jack Manning, an Old Concordian (Class of 2021), who is currently completing his studies to become a German and Geography teacher. Students enjoyed the day, with feedback including:
"The excursion was so much fun, and I learned a lot about German culture, which I think is almost as useful as knowing the language itself."
"The German morning tea was the biggest highlight! The sugary jam-filled donut and soft, savoury pretzel felt very welcoming and tasted amazing!! The best I've ever tasted!"
"Something I learned on the excursion is that learning German is a valuable asset, as it might help you get a job and German university is free."
