The Year 9 Drama class presented their production of an original Melodrama play titled ‘Of Love and Lobsters’ by Aldo Longobardi in Week 9 of Term 2.
The play featured hero, Alexander Scampi (Jeremiah 9NSHR), on a quest to save his one true love, Lady Langoustine (Matilda 9TFUR), from not only one but three evil villains, Count Vincent de la Courgette (Rex 9NSHR), Captain Ricardo (Zachary 9SWHI) and Baroness Camilla Rusé (Sophia 9VMIE). Aided by a slew of allies, including a band of maids brandishing kitchen utensils, Scampi defeats his enemies and is reunited with Langoustine. The two prove to be each other’s lobster in truth as well as in name – a joke that was not lost on the avid ‘Friends’ fans in the appreciative audience. The expected happy ending concluded with a marriage proposal and the pairing-off of all the supporting characters at a fancy ball hosted by the noble Lord Fondue al la Fromage (Annabelle 9RBEN), as well a rousing rendition of a Spice Girls favourite proving that ‘friendship never ends.’
Performing in an over-the-top comedic style can be daunting for young performers, but the Year 9s provided an entertaining evening of laughs, puns and outrageous plot twists showcasing their mastery of this classic theatrical style.
This semester, the Year 9s will continue their exploration of outlandish comedy as they learn the Italian Renaissance comedy style of Commedia dell’Arte. We hope you can come along to support our young actors in their major evening performance of their commedia canovaccio in Term 4.
