As we gather input from students about their subject preferences and feedback from teachers regarding their future aspirations, we are embarking on a recruitment drive across all campuses. Recruitment is a significant process that goes beyond merely filling a vacancy with a qualified teacher.
In our recruitment process, we establish specific criteria to guide the selection process and interviews. Key factors include alignment with the College’s culture and values, and ensuring that candidates possess both expertise and a passionate, positive attitude towards teaching and learning.
While it is essential that all teachers are qualified and meet compliance requirements, there is much more to consider. We all remember the teachers who made a lasting impact on us—what made them stand out? Did every student have the same experience with them? Not necessarily.
Conversely, we have also encountered teachers who did not leave a positive impression. Was it due to a lack of subject knowledge, excessive strictness, insufficient discipline, or an unstructured classroom environment... or was the teacher not a good match for us?
There is no single combination of attributes that defines the 'perfect' teacher who is universally valued and aligns with College needs. However, we do know that a strong cultural fit, genuine passion for teaching, and subject expertise are crucial factors. Given our diverse student body, it is important to have a similarly diverse teaching staff. This diversity ensures that every student will have a range of experiences, ideally positive, and some exceptionally enriching.
