On Thursday 29 August, Year 10 Music Explorations and Year 10 Special Interest Music students collaborated to entertain and inspire guests from the Junior Primary classes from St John’s Campus in a performance entitled “Music You will Remember”. As part of a Music Industry skills unit, students were tasked with cooperatively developing the skills and understanding required to run a show, from the conceptual development stage to the performance itself.
Our Year 10 students developed the artistic intention to “Create a fun and engaging experience for junior primary students. Our performance will demonstrate our love for music and hopefully inspire younger students to find theirs”. Through the process, they developed their skills in:
- communications and publicity
- stage management
- sound
- lighting
In the space of six weeks, they successfully developed and applied these skills as a team to produce all elements of the show independently. In addition, they had formed and rehearsed in small bands that focused on a range of styles. The concert included 'welcome' music by a solo harpist followed by performances from the groups listed below, which provided the musical focus of the performance:
- a jazz band
- a rock band
- a cello duo
- a trumpet and piano duo
- a pop band
Students were busy and focused, switching between their roles on the stage and behind the scenes.
The Year 10s were able to confirm their artistic intention was met by the audience reaction and engagement, especially with their moves on “YMCA”, and the feedback our Junior Primary students gave after the show.
