Fall of the Berlin Wall

Did you know that Saturday 9 November 2024 marked 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall? Do you know what a “Trabant” is? Do you know the meaning of “Ostalgie”, or who said “Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”? These questions and many more were answered by students from both the St John’s Campus and the Concordia Campus as part of a quiz to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the quiz entrants and the high quality of their answers.

Congratulations to the following quiz winners.

  • Charli 4GW
  • Lewis 5RG
  • Jeremy 6JS
  • Jimmy 6MT
  • Mia 7VPER
  • Tahlia 8SFOR

Aside from the quiz, this special anniversary was celebrated at Languages Club in Week 4. Students watched footage of the fall of the Berlin Wall, took part in a “divided Germany”-themed Kahoot and enjoyed tasty treats such as Lebkuchen and Gummibärchen. Frau Prenzler also showed us photos from her visit to the remnants of the wall just months after it fell, as well as an actual piece of the wall; it was literally a “hands-on” insight into an important historical event!
