Chess at Concordia is thriving this year, with strong attendance from both Middle School and Senior School students at Chess Club each week. As well as the social games and some mini tournaments, many students also enjoy the challenge of Library Technician Scott Jasper's weekly chess puzzles.
In addition to Chess Club, we fielded three teams in the inter-school Division 2 competition this year. The students performed strongly, often playing older and more experienced players. With 35 teams in the Division, Concordia Gold finished seventh on 32 points, only 2.5 points behind fourth place. It was a particularly close competition this year, with 19 teams scoring between 26 and 29 points. Concordia Silver (27 points) and Concordia Blue (26.5 points) performed very creditably, particularly given that Concordia Silver’s players, as Year 7s, were all taking part in the Secondary School competition for the first time.
At the conclusion of the season, Bill 11DWHE was awarded a trophy by the South Australian Junior Chess League for receiving 10.5 points out of a possible 16; a very impressive achievement, particularly given that he played Board 1 most weeks.
We look forward to another successful year in 2025, and encourage other students to join us, whether at Chess Club, as part of the inter-school competition, or both.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Gaskin and Scott Jasper for their support of Chess this year.
