Early in Term 4, Year 9 Chinese and German students participated in excursions to Chinatown and Hahndorf.

Chinese Excursion to Chinatown

Chinese students recently embarked on an exciting excursion to Chinatown, immersing themselves in Chinese culture and language beyond the classroom walls. Equipped with interactive booklets, they explored the vibrant streets lined with authentic Chinese stores, where they identified various cultural items, products and symbols, tasted Chinese snacks and drinks, and selected small gifts for friends or family. Students engaged directly with the local Chinese community, enhancing their understanding of both the language and cultural nuances.

The adventure continued with a traditional yum cha experience at a popular Chinese restaurant, where students sampled a variety of pre-ordered dim sum dishes. From delicate stir-fries to fragrant buns, the authentic meal inspired lively discussions and even introduced some new favourite foods!

German Excursion to Hahndorf

German students enjoyed the day in Hahndorf, exploring the historical beginnings of the township. Visits to both St Michael's and St Paul's Lutheran churches and the museum in the Hahndorf Academy, as well as a tour of the oldest existing farmlet ‘Roderts Farm’, provided insight into the journey of the first immigrants and daily life in the settlement. A delicious morning tea of German cakes at Otto's Bakery was also a highlight.

Students used the information gained during the excursion to support their final assessment task: a diary entry in German, written from the perspective of a young German settler in Hahndorf.

Languages Club

As a celebration of our final Languages Club for the year, students had fun assembling and decorating traditional ‘Lebkuchenhäuser’ (gingerbread houses). There are many varieties of ‘Lebkuchen’ in German speaking countries, and these are typically enjoyed during the festive season.

Frohe Weihnachten!
