The St John’s Campus Year 3 classes inquired into the uses of Kaurna plants along the Indigenous Plant Uses Trail led by Trent Hill at the Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Trent is an Indigenous educator, guide and storyteller, who taught us of the many healing, nutritional and tool-making benefits our local plants provide. Students said the highlights of the experience included learning about the ‘helicopter’ seed pod toys and Trent’s impressive fire-making skills.
We were also excited to view artworks from Dale Chihuly’s ‘Garden Cycle’ Exhibition. In the Bicentennial Conservatory, we had the opportunity to create our own designs for ‘Glass Critters’ that might be chosen by the artist to be made into actual glass sculptures!
In the afternoon, the Year 3s hiked along Sturt Gorge Recreation Park to experience the environmental changes we observed during the wintry season of Kudlila, when we first visited the park, to now, in the warmer spring season of Wirltuti.
It was wonderful to have our afternoon break at St Peters Campus and say ‘hello’ to the younger Concordia students there, before we made our way back to St John’s Campus.
