I hope the year is off to an enjoyable and productive start for all members of the Concordia community.
At Concordia, we believe that career guidance is more than just course counselling—it’s about empowering our students to understand their unique strengths and aspirations in an ever-changing world. Research shows that early, targeted exposure to industry experiences and personalised guidance can significantly enhance students’ confidence and clarity in making future career and study choices.
Our approach goes beyond traditional counselling by incorporating real-world experiences, one-on-one sessions, and interactive events that expose students to diverse career paths. This holistic strategy supports informed decision-making and equips students with essential skills for their future, ensuring they are better prepared to navigate the challenges and opportunities ahead.
As such, the Careers Department is busy planning several initiatives and I wanted to keep you up to date with various events or opportunities that may be relevant to you or your child.
Medicine, Dentistry and UCAT Information Evening (Years 10–12)
On Monday 3 March (Week 6) from 5.30–7.00 pm, we will host an evening session for students and parents considering careers in medicine and dentistry. Speakers from the University of Adelaide, Flinders University, and MedEntry will outline the various study pathways, admission processes and options available. They will also introduce the UCAT—what it is, how to prepare, and how to register. I look forward to seeing you there!
Year 10 Work Experience
All Year 10 students participate in our work experience program during Week 9 of Term 2. This opportunity allows students to gain real-world industry experience, develop independence and professional skills, and explore potential career paths. The program is designed to help them make more informed subject, study and career choices. If you can host a student for work experience at your workplace, please contact me—I would love to hear from you!
Year 12 1:1 Career Counselling
Every Year 12 student will have at least one individual career counselling session during the year to help them plan for life after school. Additional sessions are available upon request from students, parents or staff (this also applies to students in Years 10 and 11). My goal is to help students identify their strengths and passions, develop ideas, and craft a plan that suits their aspirations and future.
I am excited to work collaboratively with you and your student as we support their school, study and career journey. If you have any questions or need career counselling support for your child, please feel free to email me. I would be glad to help!
Wishing you all the best and every success,
Lloyd Oppelaar
