National Youth Science Forum

In January, I attended the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Year 12 Program in Brisbane. This experience was life changing.

NYSF occurs each year in the summer holidays, with two separate sessions at The Australian National University, Canberra, and The University of Queensland, Brisbane. We stayed on campus at university colleges for the entire 10 days, immersing ourselves in a range of science and technology experiences.

I was part of several industry visits where I got a glimpse behind the scenes of cutting-edge research, interacted with experts in their selective fields, engaged with industry partners and research providers, and learnt about universities and STEM career pathways.

I visited:

  • University of Queensland School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience
  • QLD Department of Primary Industries
  • SEQ Water
  • Queensland Herbarium and Biodiversity Science
  • Queensland University of Technology (QUT)

My personal highlight was having the chance to build connections with like-minded people from around Australia and to network with former NYSF participants. These people were strangers to me at the beginning, and now I have made connections and formed friendships with people from all around the country.

I applied for this experience midway through Year 11. Many students approach local Rotary groups for financial assistance to attend. I would highly encourage any individuals interested in pursuing a career in STEM or with an interest in STEM to contact Mrs Rieger about this opportunity. These 10 days have left an incredible mark on my life.
