Year 11 Legal Studies Courts and Parliament Excursion

20 Mar 2025

In Week 6 our Year 11 Legal Studies class met in Adelaide City for an excursion to the courts of Adelaide CBD and Parliament House. In the morning, we attended the District Court. We observed a sentencing procedure during which we were able to identify a number of legal doctrines in practice, but most memorable was to see a second chance being given to a deserving person. We then went to the Magistrate Courts and witnessed a variety of procedures and cases. The students, many of whom are pursuing their drivers' licenses, were able to relate to issues raised in a motor vehicle accident sentencing that was underway. In the afternoon we visited Parliament House. We were given a tour of our State Legislature by the Member for Unley, the Hon. Mr David Pisoni. During Question Time we saw representative and responsible government at work as the government and the opposition robustly discussed topical issues. It was a good day of immersion in our state legal system.
