This week, our Year 5/6 class had the exciting opportunity to once again meet our local Member of Parliament, Catherine Hutchesson. She visited to talk about how the state government creates laws and the role of parliament in debating important issues.
We learned about the different levels of government and how MPs work together to make decisions that affect our community. To experience this firsthand, we held our own debate on whether "school uniforms should not be enforced". Students took different sides, presenting arguments for and against the idea, just like in a real parliamentary debate!
This visit connects to our upcoming excursion to Parliament House and Government House, where we’ll see how these processes work in real life. It also links to our Canberra trip next term, where we will explore Australia’s federal government. Meeting our MP gave us a great insight into democracy in action!
