Preparing for Liftoff: Planning Planting on the Moon with Lunaria One and Stile Education

4 Apr 2025

With a lunar mission in 2026 planning to explore the possibility of growing plants on the moon, Concordia College Year 8 students have been helping to identify seeds that could survive the harsh conditions of space, with support from two Australian companies - Lunaria One and Stile Education. As part of their Science studies, students have exposed seeds to a range of conditions, such as extreme temperature changes, to help determine which specimens should form part of the payload taken on the mission. Spinach and rocket are the some of the frontrunners as students have applied their higher order thinking skills to help with the important testing and selection process.

Year 8 students Thomas and Amity, along with their Science teacher, Mr Jonathan Carpenter, were interviewed by The Advertiser and ABC Radio about their experience, sharing their excitement at having the opportunity to play a part in real-world scientific exploration. We look forward to following the mission with interest!
